Armadillo-like proteins are characterized by a series of armadillo repeats, typically 42–45 amino acids long, first defined in the Drosophila armadillo gene product.
These proteins are divided into subfamilies based on the number and distribution of repeats and sequence similarity.
Members of the p120(ctn)/plakophilin subfamily of Armadillo-like proteins, including CTNND1, Catenin delta-2, PKP1, PKP2, PKP4, and ARVCF, each have 10 armadillo repeats (Bonne et al., 1998 [PubMed 9721216]).
