Target Information
Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin family, crucial in T cell signal transduction, differentiation, and activation.
CD8 is mainly expressed on T cells as a heterodimer (CD8α/CD8β) acting as a co-receptor with TCR for MHC-I molecules.
It is also found on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells as CD8α homodimers.
Engagement with MHC-I/peptide complexes triggers Lck recruitment, leading to cytokine production and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation.
Activated CTLs are essential for pathogen and tumor cell clearance, with differentiation enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
