Target Information
Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a chymotrypsin-like serine protease belonging to the kallikrein family, produced by the prostate epithelium and abundant in seminal fluid. PSA can be detected in the sera of patients with prostatic carcinoma, where it is predominantly complexed with alpha-1-antichymotrypsin (ACT). The proportion of PSA-ACT complexes is higher in prostate cancer than in benign prostatic hyperplasia. PSA is a useful marker for confirming prostatic acinar cell origin in primary and metastatic carcinoma and for distinguishing non-prostatic carcinoma mimics.
