Target Information
PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) is a chymotrypsin-like serine protease of the kallikrein family produced by the prostate epithelium and abundant in seminal fluid. It can be detected in the sera of patients with prostatic carcinoma, predominantly complexed with alpha-1-antichymotrypsin (ACT). A higher proportion of PSA is complexed to ACT in prostate cancer compared to benign prostate hyperplasia. PSA is used to confirm prostatic acinar cell origin in primary and metastatic carcinoma and to rule out non-prostatic carcinoma mimics.
