BOLA3 유전자는 철-황(Fe-S) 클러스터의 생성을 통해 리포산을 함유한 2-옥소산 탈수소효소의 정상적인 성숙과 미토콘드리아 호흡 사슬 복합체의 조립에 필수적인 단백질을 암호화합니다.
이 유전자의 돌연변이는 다중 미토콘드리아 기능 장애 증후군-2와 관련이 있습니다.
두 가지 상이한 세포내 위치를 가진 이소폼을 암호화하는 전사체 변이체가 보고되었습니다.
