Target Information
SMADs are members of the MAD-related family of molecules. These intracellular proteins are essential components of the signaling pathways of serine/threonine kinase receptors belonging to the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) superfamily.
SMADs are classified as:
- Receptor-regulated SMADs (R-SMADs): SMAD1, SMAD2, SMAD5, SMAD8, SMAD9
- Common-mediator SMAD (Co-SMAD): SMAD4
- Inhibitory SMADs (I-SMADs): SMAD6, SMAD7
SMAD1, SMAD5, SMAD8, and SMAD9 share high sequence homology. Antibodies recognizing common sequences among these proteins are available. SMAD8 and SMAD9 are often used interchangeably in literature.
