Target Information
The constant region of immunoglobulin heavy chains. Immunoglobulins (antibodies) are membrane-bound or secreted glycoproteins produced by B lymphocytes. In humoral immunity, membrane-bound immunoglobulins act as receptors that, upon antigen binding, trigger B cell activation and differentiation into plasma cells secreting antibodies. Secreted immunoglobulins mediate antigen elimination. Each immunoglobulin has two antigen-binding sites formed by the variable domains of heavy and light chains. These variable domains undergo V-(D)-J rearrangement and somatic hypermutation, enabling affinity maturation. Ig alpha is the major immunoglobulin class in body secretions. [UniProt]
