Target Information
The S100A8/A9 heterocomplex, also known as MRP-8/MRP-14 complex or calprotectin, constitutes approximately 60% of the cytoplasmic protein fraction in circulating polymorphonuclear granulocytes and is also present in monocytes, macrophages, and ileal tissue eosinophils.
Peripheral blood monocytes express the antigen both extracellularly and intracellularly, while neutrophils express it only intracellularly.
The S100A8/A9 complex exhibits antibacterial, antifungal, immunomodulatory, and antiproliferative effects, and acts as a potent chemotactic factor for neutrophils. Plasma concentrations are elevated in diseases involving increased neutrophil activity, such as inflammatory bowel disease.
Calprotectin is detectable in feces due to granulocyte transmigration through the intestinal wall. Elevated levels have been observed in plasma, saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, stool, and synovial fluid during infection and inflammatory conditions.
