Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Unlike other IFPs, vimentin is expressed early in cellular development along with desmin, and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs. Vimentin plays a role in steroid synthesis by serving as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase leads to filament breakdown and contractile events that facilitate lipid droplet–mitochondria interactions, enhancing steroid synthesis.
