Target Information
Prohibitin is encoded by an evolutionarily conserved gene that is ubiquitously expressed. It is thought to act as a negative regulator of cell proliferation and may function as a tumor suppressor. Mutations in the PHB gene have been associated with sporadic breast cancer. Prohibitin is expressed as two transcripts differing in the length of the 3′ untranslated region (UTR). The longer transcript is more abundant in proliferating tissues and cells, suggesting a potential role of the extended 3′ UTR as a trans-acting regulatory RNA.
