Aquaporin 1 (AQP1) is a 28 kDa integral membrane protein originally identified in red blood cells and renal proximal tubules. It is also expressed in the choroid plexus and other tissues. AQP1 forms a water-specific channel that enables rapid water transport across the plasma membrane, facilitating osmotic balance in red cells and kidney tubules.
