Target Information
Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, plays major roles in development, tissue turnover, and tumor formation. PDCD4 encodes a tumor suppressor protein whose expression is lost in breast, colon, lung, and prostate carcinomas. It inhibits eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4A helicase activity and AP-1-mediated transcriptional activation. Akt kinase phosphorylates PDCD4, reducing its inhibitory effect on AP-1 transactivation. Two isoforms of PDCD4 are known.
