Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol and is cleaved into an active 17 kDa form upon inflammasome activation. This process involves caspase-1 activation, which mediates cleavage of pro-IL-1β. IL-1β is secreted through a non-classical pathway lacking a signal peptide. It interacts with IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors and can be inhibited by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA). IL-1β plays a crucial role in innate immune defense by inducing other proinflammatory cytokines and initiating acute-phase responses. Elevated IL-1β levels are associated with chronic inflammatory conditions, highlighting the potential therapeutic value of IL-1β neutralizing antibodies.
