Background
This gene encodes a protein belonging to the family of adenosine receptors, which are G-protein-coupled receptors involved in various intracellular signaling pathways and physiological functions. The receptor mediates a sustained cardioprotective function during cardiac ischemia, inhibits neutrophil degranulation in tissue injury, and is implicated in both neuroprotective and neurodegenerative processes. It may also regulate cell proliferation and death. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. This gene shares its 5' terminal exon with transcripts from overlapping GeneID:57413, encoding an immunoglobulin domain-containing protein. (RefSeq, Nov 2014)
