Background
Olfactory receptor family 9 subfamily A member 2 (OR9A2) in Homo sapiens is an olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses responsible for the perception of smell. These receptors are part of the large G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, mediating odorant signal transduction via G-protein mechanisms. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes and proteins is organism-specific.
