Background
Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily M member 3 (OR2M3) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses responsible for the perception of smell. These receptors belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, mediating odorant signal recognition and transduction via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The nomenclature assigned to olfactory receptor genes and proteins in humans is independent of other organisms.
