Background
The protein encoded by CNGA1 is involved in phototransduction. Together with another protein, it forms a cGMP-gated cation channel in the plasma membrane, allowing depolarization of rod photoreceptors — the final step in the phototransduction pathway.
Defects in this gene can cause autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa (ARRP). Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene (RefSeq, Dec 2008).
