Background
Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily L member 1 (OR4L1) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response responsible for the perception of smell. These olfactory receptor proteins belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate odorant signal transduction through G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, and the nomenclature for these genes and proteins is species-specific.
