Background
Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily P member 2 (OR5P2) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses responsible for the perception of smell. These receptors belong to the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, characterized by a 7-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. They mediate recognition and signal transduction of odorant molecules via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is one of the largest in the human genome, and its nomenclature is independent across species.
