Background
Muscarinic cholinergic receptors are part of the G protein-coupled receptor family. Their functional diversity arises from acetylcholine binding, leading to cellular responses such as adenylate cyclase inhibition, phosphoinositide turnover, and potassium channel mediation. These receptors mediate various effects of acetylcholine in both central and peripheral nervous systems. The muscarinic cholinergic receptor 1 (M1) is involved in vagally-induced bronchoconstriction and gastric acid secretion. The gene encoding this receptor is localized to chromosome 11q13.
