Background
Stonin 1 (STON1) is involved in the endocytosis of cell surface proteins, mediated by a complex molecular machinery assembled on the inner surface of the plasma membrane. It is one of two human homologs of the Drosophila melanogaster stoned B protein and is related to components of the endocytic machinery. The protein consists of an N-terminal proline-rich domain, a central region specific to stoned B-like proteins, and a C-terminal region homologous to the μ subunits of adaptor protein (AP) complexes.
Read-through transcription with the neighboring gene encoding TFIIA-alpha/beta-like factor generates the SALF fusion transcript, combining sequences from both genes. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
