Background
Laminins are extracellular matrix glycoproteins and major noncollagenous components of basement membranes. They play key roles in cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, signaling, neurite outgrowth, and metastasis. Laminins consist of three non-identical chains—alpha, beta, and gamma—that form a cruciform structure with three short arms and one long arm. Each chain is encoded by a distinct gene, and multiple isoforms exist. Different combinations of alpha, beta, and gamma chains create distinct heterotrimeric laminin isoforms, designated by Arabic numerals in the order of discovery (e.g., α1β1γ1 = Laminin 1).
