Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the epidermal growth factor family. It acts as an autocrine growth factor and mitogen for astrocytes, Schwann cells, and fibroblasts. Amphiregulin interacts with the EGF/TGF-alpha receptor to promote normal epithelial cell growth and inhibit certain carcinoma cell lines. It also plays roles in mammary gland, oocyte, and bone tissue development. This gene is associated with psoriasis-like skin phenotypes and various cancers and inflammatory conditions.
