ETV4 (E1A enhancer binding protein, E1AF)
Also known as PEA3, ETV4 belongs to the Ets gene family encoding sequence-specific DNA binding proteins. Members include mouse PU.1, mouse and human Ets-1, Drosophila E74, chicken and human Ets-2, and rat GABP-α. These proteins recognize DNA motifs with a central 5'-GGAA-3' element.
PEA3 binds specifically to the 5'-AGGAAG-3' motif but not to 5'-AGGAAC-3', which is recognized by PU.1. Although all Ets proteins share the same core sequence, they interact with distinct flanking regions.
PEA3 is expressed in epithelial and fibroblastic cells but not in hematopoietic cells, unlike Ets-1, Ets-2, and Fli-1, which are primarily expressed in hematopoietic cells.
