Protein Function: Encodes a sodium bicarbonate cotransporter (NBC) involved in bicarbonate secretion, absorption, and intracellular pH regulation. It functions as an electrogenic sodium/bicarbonate cotransporter with a Na⁺:HCO₃⁻ stoichiometry of 1:2 to 1:3.
Isoforms: Isoform 2 may have higher activity than isoform 1.
Clinical Relevance: Mutations in Slc4a4 are associated with proximal renal tubular acidosis and ocular abnormalities. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
