Target Information
Calcitonin is a 32-amino-acid peptide localized in C cells of the normal and hyperplastic thyroid. Staining for calcitonin aids in identifying C cell proliferative abnormalities, from hyperplasia to invasive tumors. In medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, calcitonin staining shows a fine granular cytoplasmic pattern, and amyloid deposits may also display calcitonin activity.
