IL-5는 B 세포와 호산구의 성장 및 분화를 조절하는 사이토카인으로, 호산구 생성(eosinopoiesis), 성숙 및 활성화의 주요 조절자입니다. 이 사이토카인의 과도한 생성은 천식 및 과호산구증후군과 관련이 있습니다. IL-5 수용체는 IL-3 및 CSF2/GM-CSF 수용체와 베타 서브유닛을 공유하는 이합체 형태입니다. IL-5, IL-4, IL-13, CSF2 유전자는 염색체 5q31의 120 kb 영역에 걸쳐 존재하며, 장거리 조절 요소에 의해 공동으로 조절됩니다.
