ABCC11 belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily, responsible for transporting molecules across cellular membranes.
This protein is part of the MRP subfamily, involved in multidrug resistance and physiological processes such as bile acid and steroid conjugation.
A SNP in ABCC11 determines human earwax type. ABCC11 and ABCC12 are derived from gene duplication and localized to chromosome 16q12.1.
Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described.
