Target Information
DNA cytosine base methylation plays a critical role in regulating gene transcription. Approximately 60–90% of cytosines in CpG dinucleotides are methylated. Increased methyl-CpG correlates with transcriptional silencing, particularly in developmentally regulated genes. Methylation may silence transcription by altering transcription factor binding and chromatin structure.
