HBS1L 유전자는 GTP 결합 신장 인자 계열에 속하며, 심장과 골격근에서 높은 발현을 보입니다. 이 유전자와 MYB 유전자 사이의 영역은 태아 헤모글로빈 수준을 조절하는 양적 형질좌(QTL)로 확인되었으며, 적혈구·혈소판·단핵세포 수 및 헤모글로빈 함량에 영향을 줍니다. 또한 이 영역의 DNA 다형성은 겸상적혈구병의 통증 발작 및 태아 헤모글로빈 수준과 연관됩니다. 엑손 1의 단일 염기 다형성은 베타-지중해빈혈/헤모글로빈 E의 중증도와 관련이 있으며, 다양한 스플라이싱 변이체가 보고되어 있습니다.
