Target Information

IL12B (IL-12 p40) encodes a subunit of interleukin 12, a cytokine that acts on T and natural killer cells and has diverse biological activities.
Interleukin 12 is a disulfide-linked heterodimer composed of a 40 kDa receptor-like subunit (encoded by IL12B) and a 35 kDa subunit (encoded by IL12A).
It is expressed by activated macrophages and is essential for Th1 cell development and maintenance of memory/effector Th1 cells for long-term protection against intracellular pathogens.
Overexpression has been observed in the CNS of multiple sclerosis patients, suggesting a role in disease pathogenesis.
Promoter polymorphisms have been associated with asthma severity in children.
