Target Information

TRPV1 (Transient Receptor Potential Cation Channel Subfamily V Member 1) is a receptor for capsaicin, the active component of chili peppers responsible for the sensation of burning pain. It selectively activates sensory neurons and functions as a non-selective cation channel related to the TRP family (e.g., TRPC3, TRPC6).
TRPV1 is permeable to calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium ions. Structurally, it includes six transmembrane domains, a P-loop membrane domain, and three ankyrin repeat domains.
The receptor is activated by noxious heat and protons, playing a role in pain transduction and intracellular acidosis in nociceptive neurons. Expression is mainly restricted to sensory ganglia neurons.
Four transcript variants with differences in the 5′ UTR have been identified.
Diseases associated with TRPV1 include Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Bladder Disease.
