Target Information

Erythropoietin (EPO) protein is a growth factor essential for the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of erythroid precursors.
EPO induces the final maturation of partially differentiated erythroid cells and the production of red cell-specific proteins such as hemoglobin.
The EPO receptor (EPOR) is highly expressed on precursor cells and decreases with maturation.
In the fetus, hepatocytes are the main source of EPO, while in adults, interstitial kidney cells are predominant.
EPO expression increases under hypoxic conditions and is also detected in lung and brain tissue.
Recent studies suggest that EPO may contribute to neuronal protection and tissue repair.
