Target Information
Erythropoietin (EPO) protein is a growth factor essential for the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of erythroid precursors. It induces final maturation of partially differentiated erythroid cells and promotes production of hemoglobin. The EPO receptor (EPOR) is highly expressed on precursor cells and decreases with maturation.
During fetal development, hepatocytes are the main source of EPO, while in adults, renal interstitial cells produce it. EPO expression increases under hypoxic conditions and can also occur in lung and brain tissue. Recent studies suggest EPO may protect neuronal tissue and support repair processes.
