Target Information
Neurofilaments are intermediate filament proteins found specifically in neurons and are composed predominantly of three major proteins: NF-L, NF-M, and NF-H. These proteins are essential for maintaining neuronal caliber.
- NF-L (Neurofilament Light): Light or low molecular weight subunit, ~70 kDa on SDS-PAGE.
- NF-M (Medium): Intermediate molecular weight subunit.
- NF-H (Heavy): High molecular weight subunit, 180–220 kDa, varies by species.
Expression of neurofilament proteins is tissue-specific and developmentally regulated.
