Target Information
MT-ND2: Core subunit of the mitochondrial membrane respiratory chain NADH dehydrogenase (Complex I). It is part of the minimal assembly required for catalysis, functioning in electron transfer from NADH to the respiratory chain. The immediate electron acceptor is believed to be ubiquinone.
Defects in MT-ND2 are associated with Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), a maternally inherited disease causing acute or subacute loss of central vision due to optic nerve dysfunction. Cardiac conduction and neurological defects have also been reported. LHON results from mitochondrial DNA mutations affecting respiratory chain complexes.
Defects in MT-ND2 may also be linked to Alzheimer disease mitochondrial (AD-MT) susceptibility.
