Target Information
The PDGF-B gene encodes a member of the protein family that includes platelet-derived growth factors (PDGF) and vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF). The encoded preproprotein is proteolytically processed to generate PDGF subunit B, which can form homodimers or heterodimers with PDGF subunit A. These proteins activate PDGF receptor tyrosine kinases, influencing diverse developmental processes.
Mutations in this gene are linked to meningioma. Reciprocal translocations between chromosomes 22 and 17, involving this gene and collagen type 1, alpha 1, are associated with dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, a rare skin tumor.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
