Target Information
CD4 antigen plays a critical role in the recognition of MHC class II molecules and serves as a co-receptor for HIV. It is mainly expressed on T-helper lymphocytes but also found on monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. CD4 expression is detected in thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and certain regions of brain and gut. It contributes to early T-cell activation via association with the T-cell receptor complex and protein tyrosine kinase Lck, and may mediate neuronal damage in immune-related CNS diseases. Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified (RefSeq, July 2017).
