Target Information

ATF5 is a protein-coding gene functioning as a transcription factor that can either stimulate or repress gene transcription by binding to DNA regulatory elements such as:

  • cAMP response element (CRE): 5'-GTGACGT[AC][AG]-3'
  • ATF5-specific response element (ARE): 5'-C[CT]TCT[CT]CCTT[AT]-3'
  • Amino acid response element (AARE)

ATF5 plays a critical role in:

  • Cell survival, proliferation, and differentiation (cell type-dependent)
  • Cerebral cortex formation and neuroprogenitor cell maintenance
  • Cerebellar granule neuron progenitor proliferation (via SHH pathway)
  • Survival of mature olfactory sensory neurons (OSN)
  • Osteogenic differentiation
  • Induction of EGR1 expression with ELK1 for proliferation and survival
  • Anti-apoptotic regulation through BCL2 transcription
  • Hepatic CYP2B6 activation in cooperation with NR1I3/CAR
  • Regulation of IL1B signaling in liver
  • Activation of C/EBP family members upon IL1B stimulus
  • Promotion of adipocyte differentiation with CEBPB and CEBPA
  • Centrosome dynamics control and centriole–pericentriolar material interaction
