Target Information
Nitric oxide (NO) is an inorganic, gaseous free radical that acts as a signaling molecule between cells. It is involved in vasorelaxation, neurotransmission, and cytotoxicity. NO is produced by nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzymes, which catalyze the oxidation of L-arginine to L-citrulline and NO.
Three NOS isoforms have been identified:
- nNOS (type I): neuronal NOS
- iNOS (type II): inducible NOS
- eNOS (type III): endothelial NOS
All NOS isoforms contain binding domains for calmodulin, NADPH, FAD, and FMN.
