Target Information
Peroxiredoxin (Prx) is a growing peroxidase family whose mammalian members are known to be involved in cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Many isoforms (approximately 50 proteins) share amino acid sequence homology and contain an active site cysteine residue with thiol-specific antioxidant activity.
Mammalian Prxs consist of six members grouped into typical 2-Cys, atypical 2-Cys, and 1-Cys Prx types. Except Prx VI (1-Cys subgroup), the other five 2-Cys Prx isotypes have thioredoxin-dependent peroxidase (TPx) activity utilizing thioredoxin, thioredoxin reductase, and NADPH as a reducing system.
Mammalian Prxs are 20–30 kDa in size and vary in subcellular localization: Prx I, II, and VI in cytosol; Prx III in mitochondria; Prx IV in ER and secretion; Prx V in peroxisome, mitochondria, and cytosol.
