Target Information
MELK is a serine/threonine kinase related to the AMPK family, associated with cell cycle regulation. It is overexpressed in various cancers and considered a potential therapeutic target. MELK phosphorylates substrates such as BCL2L14, CDC25B, MAP3K5/ASK1, and ZNF622, playing roles in apoptosis activation, cell cycle progression, and carcinogenesis. It is essential for proliferation of embryonic and postnatal neural progenitors and may influence mammary carcinogenesis through inhibition of BCL2L14. Additionally, it contributes to spliceosome assembly inhibition during mitosis.
