Target Information
Kallikreins are a subgroup of serine proteases with diverse physiological functions. Many kallikreins are implicated in carcinogenesis and may serve as novel cancer or disease biomarkers.
The KLK7 gene is one of fifteen kallikrein subfamily members clustered on chromosome 19. Its encoded enzyme is involved in proteolysis of intercellular cohesive structures preceding desquamation—the shedding of the outermost epidermal layer.
Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding the same protein.
