Target Information
Cyclins bind to and regulate the activity of Cyclin-dependent protein kinases (CDKs). Cyclin B1 (CCNB1) is a regulatory protein involved in mitosis and essential for cell cycle control at the G2/M transition. It complexes with p34 (cdc2) to form the maturation-promoting factor (MPF).
Two alternative transcripts exist: a constitutively expressed form and a cell cycle-regulated form predominantly expressed during G2/M phase. Cyclin B1 accumulates during G2 phase and is destroyed at the end of mitosis in an APC-dependent manner, which is crucial for cell cycle progression.
Cyclin B1 is overexpressed in several cancers, including breast, prostate, and non-small cell lung cancer.
