Target Information
BIM belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. Members of this family form hetero- or homodimers and regulate apoptosis through anti- or pro-apoptotic functions. The protein encoded by this gene contains a Bcl-2 homology domain 3 (BH3) and interacts with BCL2, BCL2L1/BCL-X(L), and MCL1 to activate apoptosis. Expression can be induced by nerve growth factor (NGF) and the forkhead transcription factor FKHR-L1, suggesting its role in neuronal and lymphocyte apoptosis. Mouse transgenic studies indicate BIM is an essential initiator of apoptosis in thymocyte-negative selection. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.
