Product Specific Information

This GA5 monoclonal antibody reacts with human, mouse, rat, chicken, rabbit, and pig glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). GFAP is a 49-kDa type III intermediate filament protein expressed in neural tissues, distinguishing astrocytes from other glial cells during CNS development.
Three splice variants exist, with alpha-GFAP being predominant. GFAP co-assembles with vimentin and nestin, though not required for filament assembly. Mutations in GFAP cause Alexander disease and overexpression is observed in glial-derived tumors.

Applications Reported: Suitable for immunocytochemistry (ICC) and immunohistochemistry on frozen sections (IHC-F).
Applications Tested: Validated on fixed and permeabilized C6 cells ≤10 µg/mL. Not validated for flow cytometry.
Filter Recommendation: Use filters capturing 615 nm emission (e.g., Excitation 560/55, 585LP, Emission 645/75). Alexa Fluor® 594 filters are compatible.
Filtration: 0.2 µm post-manufacturing filtered.

Target Information

GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein) is a class III intermediate filament protein expressed in astrocytes and astroglia of the CNS, satellite cells of peripheral ganglia, and non-myelinating Schwann cells. Also expressed in neural stem cells, lens epithelium, Kupffer cells, and certain tumors.
GFAP serves as a marker for astrocytic cells and is critical in distinguishing astrocytes during development. Mutations in GFAP lead to Alexander disease. Multiple isoforms arise via alternative splicing.
