Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein composition compared to prokaryotic ribosomes, where the ratio is reversed. Prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which is absent in mammalian mitoribosomes.
This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein involved in apoptotic pathways initiated by tumor necrosis factor-alpha, Fas ligand, and gamma interferon. The protein may bind ATP/GTP and function with mitoribosomal protein S27. Splice variants differing in the 5′ UTR encode the same protein, and pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 1q and 2q.
