Target Information
The protein encoded by IL-16 is a pleiotropic cytokine that functions as a chemoattractant, modulator of T cell activation, and inhibitor of HIV replication.
Its signaling is mediated by CD4 and involves proteolytic processing yielding two functional proteins.
The cytokine function is attributed to the secreted C-terminal peptide, while the N-terminal product may play a role in cell cycle control.
Caspase 3 is involved in proteolytic processing, and alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
