Target Information
Apolipoprotein B (apo B) in human plasma is a major protein of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) with a molecular mass of approximately 260–500 kDa.
It binds to specific receptors on cell membranes and is involved in the removal of LDL and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol from circulation.
LDL serves as the carrier protein for cholesterol in the blood, mediating uptake and clearance via LDL receptors.
Oxidatively modified LDL is found in atherosclerotic lesions and is recognized by macrophages through scavenger receptors such as A and CD36.
Elevated Apolipoprotein B levels are associated with premature atherosclerosis.
Apolipoprotein B occurs in plasma as two main isoforms, apoB-48 and apoB-100, encoded by a single gene.
The shorter apoB-48 is produced through RNA editing, introducing a stop codon that truncates translation.
Mutations in the Apolipoprotein B gene or its regulatory regions can cause disorders such as hypobetalipoproteinemia and hypercholesterolemia due to ligand-defective apoB.
