Muscle myosin is a hexameric protein composed of 2 heavy chain subunits, 2 alkali light chain subunits, and 2 regulatory light chain subunits.
The MYH7 gene encodes the beta (slow) heavy chain subunit of cardiac myosin, mainly expressed in human ventricular tissue and slow-twitch skeletal muscle fibers.
Expression levels vary with cardiac contractile velocity, thyroid hormone status, and hemodynamic load.
Mutations in MYH7 are linked to familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, myosin storage myopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, and Laing early-onset distal myopathy.
